Paying Attention to Each Other
Infant and Adult during the Bath
By Anna Tardos and Genevieve Appell

In four bath-time scenes we see children between 8 and 12 months of age with their respective care-takers. The film shows how each bath-time with its protagonists is unique although all four bath scenes follow the same order of events. The quality of attention that both child and adult pay one another is of central importance here. It is this dialogue that allows the infant to define him or herself and play an active role in his or her own development.

A Baby's Attention at Play
By Anna Tardos and Genevieve Appell

Drawing on the many years worth of observations made by Anna Tardos, the authors define different levels of attention that children between the ages of 9 and 12 months demonstrate in their spontaneous play. We see how the attention of the children fluctuates between these different types of attention, how long they remain in one type and when they switch.

Freedom to Move On One's Own
By Anna Tardos and Agnes Szanto

It was the Hungarian pediatrician, Emmi Pikler, who called attention to a child's independent development of motor skills. Given the freedom to move on their own, children will learn themselves and of their own initiative to sit up, stand up and walk.
The three children in this film are living at the Emmi Pikler Institute in Budapest, Hungary, where they have warm and stable relationships with the adults taking care of them. We will see how important moving and exploring variations of movement is in their lives.

Babies and Children with Each Other
By Maria Vincze, Genevieve Appell and Judit Falk

This film documents a long-term study by Dr Mária Vincze, in which she observes a group of children living together at the Emmi Pikler Institute in Budapest. The children are three months of age at the beginning of the study and two-and-a-half years old at the end. Dr Vincze observes the children as they live, play and develop in a secure and trusting environment. The children are observed playing their familiar surroundings without any interference or alteration in the course of their daily activities. The viewer is engaged in a dynamic search for understanding that results in constructive insights for being with children.

Bathing the Baby
Concern, Empathy and Acquired Gestures (1)

By Julianna Vamos and Iren Csatari

"If the child can trust to be able to influence the events happening to him, if he can feel that he is not a passive receiver, but an active participant of his care, then his sense of competence will grow stronger. If he is never dealt with as if he was an object - be it either precious os worthless - but as a human being who feels, observes, remembers and understands or will understand, if the words and gestures are not only nice but they also consider the sensitivity of the child continuously, then a real dialogue during care will form between the two partners starting at the youngest age."
- Judit Falk, M. D.

DVD NZ$30 (including P&P both International and NZ)
Total Running Time: 40 minutes approx

This DVD allow for close and repeated observation of the distinctive movements and process Milla covers as she matures through the stages of gross motor, fine motor and personality development.  In honing our observation skills we better prepare ourselves to support the learning of the infants and toddlers in our care.
Presented in three parts, the DVD illustrates different aspects of Milla finding her own natural, free, independent movement.
1  'Milla Makes a Move' (17’8”) From her back to her tummy and to her back again, Milla moves through rolling and pushing up into a crawling position and a sitting position.
2  'Milla Finds Her Hands' (16’58”) Movement allows Milla to explore her environment and manipulate the toys and objects she chooses.
3  'Wait or Intervene?' (12’23”) We look at how Milla gets stuck when learning to move herself and how we can support her in these situations.
